The Sony Ericsson W880i is a mobile phone that was released in September 2006. Part of Sony Ericsson's Walkman series, the phone has been popular due its tiny dimensions and quality construction.[citation needed] At only 9.4 mm thick, the W880 is one of the few phones currently on the market that is thinner than 1 cm (10 mm) together with phones like Motorola L7 and Nokia 5310.

The W880i is available in three different colour schemes; "Flame Black", "Steel Silver","Pitch Black". There is a fourth color scheme, "Gold", which is exclusively available to Vodafone. There is also a non-3G version of the phone; the Sony Ericsson W888c.

Features

The W880 features a 2.0 megapixel camera (without autofocus & flash) and a secondary VGA camera located on the front which can be used for 3G video conferencing. The phone also comes with Walkman Player v2.0, which gives a faster interface with very few differences from the previous version. The phone comes with 16 MB of memory and a 1 GB Memory Stick Micro, but can be expanded up to 16 GB via the Memory Stick Micro slot. Other features include photo/video editing, picture blogging, web gallery uploading, QCIF video recording, and 3G data transferring capabilities of up to 384 kbit/s. This model shares all of the features the W850i has except the form factor and the lack of radio and camera light. The phone's CPU is an ARM 9 processor clocked at 206 MHz.

Compatibility

Supports a wide range of audio, video and image formats, next to software:

The Sony Ericsson W850i is the first 3G sliding form factor phone for Sony Ericsson, introduced in 2006, and is a member of their Walkman line. The phone made its first public appearance in the 2006 movie, The Da Vinci Code, months before its release. It is similar mechanically to the Sony Ericsson K800i, but differs in its form factor, memory card support of the Memory Stick PRO Duo instead of Memory Stick Micro, and the camera (2.0 megapixels instead of 3.2 for the K800i, and with some additional features removed)

It is available in Precious Black or Golden White and is configured for operator over the air (OTA) music download services and accepts many popular music file formats including e-AAC+, and includes a 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. The Golden White version has a gold Walkman logo on the back which the black version does not include.

The Walkman player contains Gracenote Mobile TrackID, which enables a user to record a few seconds of a song, either via the microphone or the in built FM radio, and then with one click send that clip to the Gracenote worldwide music database which will identify the track and relay the information back to the phone.

This model shares all of the features the W880i has except the form factor and the inclusion of an FM radio on this model.

There is also a non-3G version of the W850i called W830c.

The W810 (available as the W810i and W810c) is a camera phone produced by Sony Ericsson and the successor of the W800.

Features

The W810i is part of Sony Ericsson's Walkman line of mobile phones.[1] While being similar to the W800, the W810 has benefited from several improvements. Most notably are quad band connectivity, EDGE support for faster wireless data transfers, a slightly enhanced display, but slightly reduced battery life.

Other features include a full function internet browser, 2 mega pixel digital camera with auto-focus, the HPM-70 stereo headset, Memory Stick PRO Duo slot, 20 MB of internal memory, and a music-only mode where phone functions are fully turned off, this mode also allows the phone to be used as a Walkman in areas mobile phones would usually be barred from, such as airplanes and hospitals, in addition to providing longer battery-life. The phone supports MP3, AMR, MIDI, IMY, EMY, WAV (16kHz maximum sample rate) and AAC audio formats and MPEG-4 and 3GPP video formats.

While official support for Memory Stick PRO Duo is capped at 4GB, many users have reported using 8GB sticks with full functionality (read and write).

Cosmetics

Sony Ericsson W810i rear

There are many small cosmetic changes from the W800, but most noticeable is the absence of the classic joystick that has been found on the majority of Sony Ericsson mobile phones since the T68i. This has been replaced by a D-pad designed to improve ease of use when listening to music and to provide a longer life to the keypad (as the classic joystick tended to fail due to dust). The casing color has changed from burnt orange and cream to satin black. The sliding camera lens cover has also been omitted completely. However, a K750i or W800 back cover (with lens cover) will fit with minor modifications.

Availability

The Sony Ericsson W810 is available as the W810i for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, and North America, and the W810c for Mainland China. The W810 was released worldwide in April 2006. A white color variation of the W810 was released on 20 June 2006. and is currently available on AT&T in the U.S. and O2 in the UK. The W810i is available in both black and white on Rogers in Canada.

The W800 Walkman, released in 2005 [12 August 2005 in the UK], was the first Sony Ericsson phone to use the Walkman brand. The phone features Bluetooth v1.2 (with full Bluetooth 2.0 compliance), Infrared and USB connectivity.

It is very similar to the Sony Ericsson K750 but differs with regards to its media playback software and its cosmetic design changes. The major differences to the K750 are the included 512 MB Memory Stick PRO Duo, the introduction of the Flight mode function where all radio signals are switched off, and the stereo portable handsfree headset Sony Ericsson HPM-70, which features a 3.5 mm headphone jack, allowing the included headphones to be swapped for any other pair of headphones which has a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Motorola ROKR E1 iTunes-enabled mobile phone, its successor the Motorola ROKR E2, the Nokia N91, the Nokia 3250, and the Samsung SGH-i300 and its successor the Samsung SGH-i310 are its main competitors. The Sony Ericsson W800 was replaced by the Sony Ericsson W700 in April 2006 replacing the size of the memory stick with a 256 MB and eliminating the camera's autofocus function thus reducing the cost of the handset. Also, it is available in a different case colour option called Titanium Gold, in addition to the W800's Smooth White (burnt orange and cream).

The W810 proceeded after the W800. The Sony Ericsson W700 comes included with a 256 MB Memory Stick Pro Duo instead of 512 MB.

The W800 officially supports external memory capacity of only 2 GB, while its successor the W810 supports 4GB. The key feature of this cellphone is the 2 megapixel camera with Autofocus, video recording function, and flash. The phone is also MP3 and AAC compatible and has up to 30 hours playback time in Music mode. The standby and talktime the battery can support is 400 hours and 9 hours respectively. The W800 is still available from many retailers, as of June 2006.

Criticisms

Whilst being a highly capable phone, it does suffer from some of the flaws that the K750 does. The primary concern is that of the joystick. This has long been a contentious issue with some reviewers finding it hard to use and highly susceptible to damage over time, in as much as it will cease to function (although it should be noted that the W810i resolves this issue). The other is that the construction quality, whilst physically solid, is prone to creaking and wear over time. The screen, again whilst of a good out of the box quality, is prone to fingerprints and scratching owing to the fact it is mounted flush within the phone, meaning if left to rest face down damage can occur. The dust gets trapped inside the screen easily and reduces visibility of the display. However these factors have not stopped it becoming highly popular. Also the phone has been found to randomly restart and turn off, especially while coming out of the clock on sleep mode.

Some users experience a high level of background hiss and quantization noise when using the Walkman feature at low volume levels, a problem that first appeared in a firmware update. No official fix is planned, though end users have provided solutions that can be applied by directly accessing the phone's filesystem.

Fake W800

A fake W800 has been released in China under the name of Music Mobile W800c. It is similar in design to the SE W800 but is slightly taller. The Walkman logo on the bottom of the phone is flipped horizontally, 'Sony Ericsson' at the top of the phone is replaced by 'music mobile', the 'Walkman' on the side is replaced by 'Musicvideo'. The fake phone has a 1.3 MP camera, FM radio and uses MicroSD cards. The phones software also copies some elements of the SE W800, the default wallpaper is the default Walkman image, the main menu uses Sony Ericsson icons (Walkman, PlayNow, Contacts etc.).

The Sony Ericsson K850i is a high-end mobile phone released in October 2007. It was announced in June 2007 as the flagship product in Sony Ericsson's K ("Kamera") series, with a 5 megapixel CMOS camera sensor. The K850 will be the first Sony Ericsson phone released outside of NTT DoCoMo to support microSD and microSDHC along with Sony's traditional M2. It also introduces the usage of three touch-sensitive softkeys right under the display and a new form of navigation button, omitting the classic joystick introduced with the Ericsson T68. The camera interface has been revamped to resemble the format of cybershot digital cameras. According to the manufacturer the UMTS talk time has been significantly increased to 3 hrs 30 min over its predecessor, the K800 and K810. [1] (K800 2 hrs 30 min). It was Sony Ericsson's first 3.5 HSDPA supporting mobile phone, and was also the first 3G "global" mobile with supporting all major operating network frequency in the world including GSM 850, GSM 900, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, HSDPA, UMTS 850, UMTS 1900, UMTS 2100. [2]

Design and features

The phone introduces a new button in the Cyber-shot line: on the right side a switch allows to choose between photo, video and playback mode. The phone is available in the colours "Luminous Green", "Velvet Blue" and "Quicksilver Black".

Key features include:

Camera Information

5.04 megapixel CMOS sensor, 16x digital zoom, natural color rendering, and built in xenon flash plus three additional LEDs for autofocusing and can be used for video recording. It also features Bestpic(Sony Ericsson's brand name for burst mode) which captures nine images in a row then you can choose the ones you want to save. In camera mode the keypad is differently lit so the user can easily find the camera shortcut buttons (Shoot mode, Scenes, Self-timer, Flash mode).

In common with the K810 and the K800, programs called Photo Fix, HP print and Face Warp is bundled with the K850. Users can also easily increase the brightness and the contrast of the photo with PhotoFix and PhotoDJ.

Video recording is QVGA (320×240) @ 30 frames per second. (K800 QCIF (176x144) @ 15 fps.) Supports Image and Video Stabilizer so videos and photos taken would be less likely to appear blurred and shaky. There have been major software problems in the past but now have been solved. Moreover, as in most Sony Ericsson phones, the camera software, called camera driver, can be modified to bring new features along with considerable improvement. Camera drivers modified by Brazuka and Strong are most famous. Recently, Adolf Vicious and Witchking have begun work on camera driver and the latter driver seems to be most promising.

The Sony Ericsson K800i, and its variant, the Sony Ericsson K790, are mobile phones of their class from Sony Ericsson. Launched in July 2006 (for the K800i in the UK market; others may vary), the phones are the successor to the Sony Ericsson K750i. Both of the phones feature a 3.2 megapixel digital camera complete with a xenon flash, a protective lens cover, and a new "BestPic" bracketing feature, and are the first to be tagged with the Sony Cyber-shot branding. The new "BestPic" feature takes 9 full quality snapshots of a subject in quick succession, allowing the user to choose the best shots from them. On the entertainment front, the phones have a media player supporting MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ and WMA music files and 3GP/MPEG-4 video files. The phones also feature a RDS FM radio, and a Memory Stick Micro (M2) slot for expandable solid state memory (up to 4GB). It is the phone used by James Bond in the 2006 Casino Royale film.[1]

The difference between the two phones is that the K790 supports GSM and EDGE, while the K800 supports UMTS and GSM. As a result, the K800i features a QCIF (176X144) resolution front-mounted camera for 3G video conferencing. According to the official Sony Ericsson specifications (to be found on their website), the K800's talk time drops steeply from around 7 hours when using GSM to about 2 hours 30 minutes whilst using UMTS. A modified version of the K800i, the Sony Ericsson K810i, is available since Q2 2007. Its successor is the 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson K850i.

Bottom View

The K800i/K790 is a "block" (or "candy bar") style phone that weighs 115 grams, with its buttons operated by the thumb. It has the "dual-front" design common to most Sony Ericsson mobile phones since the Sony Ericsson K700, with the back of the mobile phone designed like a digital camera and intended to be held sideways to take photographs. The central joystick button is used for selecting options and navigating menus, with the "C" button as an undo or delete key, and the arrow-labelled button as a "back button".

The Royale Silver version of the phone

The two buttons labelled by white horizontal lines, known as hotkeys or soft keys perform the function of making decisions with only two choices. Such decisions are labelled on the phone's display. The button in between the right soft key and the "C" button acts as a shortcut key, which brings up a user-customisable shortcut menu when pressed. The two "A/B" buttons on either side of the earpiece are used for horizontal games support, as in the Sony Ericsson W550/W600. The on/off button is located on the top of the phone. The Memory Stick Micro M2 slot is located on the left-hand side of the phone. On the right-hand side of the phone there are three keys: two for controlling volume, skipping through tracks in the Media Player, changing radio channel, and zooming in and out when in camera mode. The third button on the right is the camera shutter button which operates the phone's key feature, a 3.2 megapixel Cyber-shot digital camera. In amongst the speaker at the top of the phone is a small camera used for video calls. Located next to this is the IrDA port.

Photo taken with K790i

The phone has a standard minimum user-available internal memory capacity of 64 MB. The external memory capacity can be extended by using a Memory Stick Micro M2, intended to support both the camera and the media player function of the phone. The phone can be connected to a computer for data transfer and recharging by using either the built-in Bluetooth wireless or the supplied USB data cable, which connects to the phone using Sony Ericsson's proprietary FastPort connector, which is located on the bottom of the phone. The phone can also be used as a Bluetooth or USB GPRS/3G modem.

K800i/K790 cellphones feature full support for USB mass storage recognition. This means that there will be no need for driver installation on modern operating systems such as Mac OS X, Windows XP and Linux, as the phone will be automatically recognized as an external storage device upon connection. Data retrieval also includes the ability to output files by infra-red and Bluetooth (as well as in network-transmitted messages) to other devices. Although typical of many recent Sony Ericsson devices, support for outputting files other than over the mobile network has been variable with other brands.

In the calendar, a new feature is supported for recurring event notifications on a yearly basis, which the predecessor K750 lacked. The calendar is closely compatible with Microsoft Outlook.

Mac OS X v10.4.9 added support for calendar and contact syncing under iSync 2.4.

Startup failures and data corruption

For some users, the K800i can unexpectedly fail to startup, by repeatedly showing a flashing white screen. This problem happens due to internal data corruption (caused by the phone), and can only be fixed by restoring the phone to its original software/firmware — meaning that all personal data will be deleted. Users are recommended to regularly backup their data using both a Memory Stick — for photos and contacts — and using the software MyPhoneExplorer to backup text messages, calendar appointments and other data to a PC.

A startup failure can be forecast by the following events:

  • All the custom words added to the dictionary are suddenly deleted
  • The phone duplicates some text messages in the Drafts folder
  • Many text messages in the Inbox are suddenly deleted

Users should back up their data when any of these events happen.

Media device problems

Sometimes dependent on age of phone/operating system the K800i doesn't show in media player software even when it is visible as mass storage. A work around is to uninstall the phone via device manager and wait for the phone to automatically reinstall.

Hidden features

The following tricks work on most Sony Ericsson phones as well as on K800. The service menu is available using the standard code implemented on several generations of non-Walkman Sony Ericsson phones: right, *, left, left, *, left, * from the standby screen. The service menu offers information on configuration and software versions in addition to offering functionality tests and some settings.
In the service menu there is also a hidden text. Go to the Service info/Model info entry. It shows your model number (K800i).
